Overview of High School Guidance Department
  • Register and schedule all new students
  • Help with orientation of freshmen to high school
  • Schedule all students into classes
  • Talk to individual students with emotional, personal, social, academic problems
  • Confer with parents, teachers, administration
  • Provide a sign-up list for students to see counselors
  • Maintain a Four Year Plan and Educational Development Plan on each student
  • Promote Career Pathways
  • Meet in the classrooms with all grade levels regarding career and academic planning
  • Oversee and set up job shadowing experiences
  • Promote the ACT test dates and ACT preparation materials
  • Provide a guidance newsletter and post it on the school web site
  • Collect college applications and send them in
  • Host a financial aid meeting in the high school library
  • Post and process scholarship applications
  • Organize and schedule the MEAP testing, PLAN test, PSAT test and all AP testing
  • Coordinate the Senior Honors Convocation
  • Maintain the students’ official transcripts
  • Perform credit evaluations for all students
  • Determine students who have met all the requirements for high school graduation
  • Provide official academic records for graduated students
  • Transfer all records for students changing schools
  • Facilitate the creation of student portfolios
  • Schedule parent-teacher conferences
  • Work with outside agencies to provide services for students
  • Coordinate homebound services when necessary


Sam Walton Community Scholarship:  $1,000  online application www.walmartfoundation.org  Deadline:  January 14, 2008

Rare Foundation Scholarship:  $2,500  Everyday Hero Writing Scholarship  Deadline:  February 29, 2008

Burger King Scholars:  $1,000  online application  www.bk.com/scholars  Must have 2.5 GPA or higher and work 15 hours per week

American Legion Scholarships:  Several available.  Visit www.michiganlegion.org for applications

Edwardsburg Education Association:  $500  Must have 3.0 GPA or higher.  Deadline:  April 11, 2008

Elks Most Valuable Student:  Several available.  Application deadline:  January 11, 2008

Michigan Education Association:  Selection based on academic achievement, school/community service and extracurricular activities.  Application deadline:  February 8, 2008

MAB High School Broadcast Scholarship:  $500  Must be planning to pursue a career in a broadcast-related field.  Application deadline:  December 31, 2007

Michigan Oil and Gas Producers Education Foundation:  $500  Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be pursuing a degree in an energy related field of study.  Application deadline:  April 1, 2008

Michigan Society of Professional Engineers:  $3,000 annually  online application www.michiganspe.org  Must have 3.0 GPA or higher and a minimum ACT score of 26.  Application deadline:  January 14, 2008

NALS of Michigan:  $1,000  Must have a B average and be planning to enter the legal field.  Application deadline:  January 15, 2008

Monsanto Agriculture Scholarship - $1500 Awarded to high school seniors who plan to pursue a career in agriculture. Applications available online at: www.monsanto.com or www.ffa.org

The David Weichhand Memorial Scholarship - $1500 Must be a member of United Federal Credit Union, must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applications available in guidance office.

Eastern Michigan University Alumni Association Scholarship - $1000 per year for four years. Must be child or grandchild of EMU alum. Must have GPA of 3.2 or higher. Must be admitted to EMU. Pick up an application in guidance.
